What is Dampfross?
First, a quick clarification: we aren't talking about the classic 1980s train board game (also called Dampfross or Railway Rivals). Instead, this is a minimalist logic puzzle game available right in your browser.
Dampfross is a connection puzzle. The objective is to lay down track segments on a grid to create a single, continuous railway line that connects Village A to Village B.
How to Play
The rules are incredibly simple to learn, but the puzzles quickly become brain-teasers:
- Connect the Dots: You must build a continuous track from the starting village to the destination village.
- Follow the Numbers: At the edge of the grid, you will see numbers for each row and column. These numbers dictate exactly how many track segments must exist in that specific line.
- No Dead Ends: The tracks must only go from Start to Finish. You cannot have stray pieces of track or loops that don't contribute to the main path.
Why It's Great for Long Distance
While Dampfross is technically a single-player logic puzzle, it makes for a fantastic co-op experience. Here's how you can play it together:
- Screen Sharing: Hop on a Discord or Zoom call, share your screen, and try to solve the daily puzzle together. Discussing strategies like "Wait, if we place a curve here, the third column will have too many pieces!" is surprisingly engaging and requires good communication.
- Time Trials: Alternatively, load up the same puzzle on your respective devices and race to see who can solve it first. The loser buys dinner (or rather, orders delivery to the winner's house!).
Grid games are excellent because they require no downloads, load instantly, and run on any device, making them highly accessible regardless of what computer your partner uses.
